Awwwards Honorable Mention
Halloween is a time for ghosts, but there’s one horror that sticks around long after the decorations come down: plastic pollution. Despite efforts to reduce single-use plastics, Bulgarians still use an average of 180 plastic bags per person each year — a shocking 80% more than the EU average. This chilling statistic inspired us to partner with Smart Pack, a leader in biodegradable and compostable packaging, to create a Halloween campaign that would raise awareness and make a hauntingly memorable statement about the impact of plastic waste on our planet.
Bringing the Campaign to Life
To get our message across, we created ghostly sculptures made entirely from eco-friendly Smart Pack bags. These "ghosts" were crafted from 100% biodegradable and soil-fertilizing materials, lit with low-energy LEDs, and built on reusable frames. Strategically placed in Halloween markets, parks, and shopping malls, they served as eerie reminders of what plastic waste leaves behind.
Impact Beyond Halloween
These ghostly figures stayed up as the holiday season rolled in, sending an important reminder to consumers just before the Christmas rush. With donation points and educational materials set up near each installation, we encouraged people to think twice about their plastic use. The campaign reached thousands and helped Smart Pack spread a vital message about reducing plastic pollution and choosing sustainable packaging.
The digital approach
We designed a landing page and social media campaign that tied together Halloween's thrill with the urgency of reducing plastic. Each post invited people to reflect on their habits — and encouraged them to make sustainable choices. High-quality images and engaging calls to action drove traffic to the landing page, where people could learn more about Smart Pack’s eco-friendly solutions and find the locations where they can recycle plastic in the city.
