Ghosts are one of Halloween’s symbols of horror. However, there is something much more terrifying haunting the Earth every day — plastic pollution.

One of the most well-known manifestations of plastic are plastic bags, a staple in the everyday life of global society, as well as the Bulgarian society. Although, according to official data, the distribution of single-use plastic has decreased, each Bulgarian uses an average of 180 plastic bags annually, or 80% more than the rest of the European Union.

This frightening statistic united us and Smart Pack, a company specialising in the production of biodegradable, compostable, and soil-fertilising packaging, around the Halloween initiative:

Halloween quickly turns from a holiday that brings joy to adults and children into a huge polluter of the environment, which, unfortunately, meant the days leading up to it were the perfect time for the campaign to kick off.

Using sculptures of ghosts made from eco-friendly Smart Pack bags the initiative combined the Halloween spirit with an important message that educated consumers and inspired action towards a positive change.

The sculptures were made from 100% biodegradable and soil-fertilising Smart Pack bags, low-energy LED lights, and reusable frames, minimising the environmental footprint of the project. They were strategically positioned at Halloween markets, in parks as a reminder of what we’re fighting for, and in shopping malls — a symbol of consumerism.

The ghosts arrived just before the Christmas period of overconsumption with donation points and an important message to minimise the use of plastic bags and recycle single-use plastic.
